Professor Simeon Yates
Professor Simeon Yates, Department of Communication and Media, has been appointed to the Government’s Digital Inclusion Action Committee (DIAC) as an Independent Plenary Member, working with Baroness Armstrong and sitting on the Inclusive Digital Services subcommittee.
The Digital Inclusion Action Committee (DIAC) is an external advisory body that will work closely with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) – home of the digital centre of government. Its role is to scrutinise, steer and help determine the work of the government in reducing digital exclusion in every part of the UK. DIAC supports the government’s vision of ensuring that everyone – regardless of age, income, location, or ability – can access and benefit from digital technologies.
Professor Yates has been researching aspects of digital inequality for over 20 years, including access to services, culture and heritage, and employment. This work has been funded by the ESRC, the Nuffield Foundation, the Welsh and Scottish Governments, and local government including the GMCA, LCR, and South Yorkshire. The work has included long-term collaboration with third-sector organisations such as the Good Things Foundation, CWMPAS, and SCVO. This collaborative team recently completed work on a UK Minimum Digital Living Standard.
Talking about his appointment Professor Yates said: “I’m proud to join the Digital Inclusion Action Committee, bringing my expertise to help eradicate digital exclusion across the UK. When people can fully access and use digital tools, it transforms lives, opening doors to employment, education, healthcare, and community connection. As a committee member, I’m committed to ensuring no one is left behind in our digital society. Together, we’ll scrutinise government progress, provide strategic guidance, and champion the voices of those currently excluded from digital opportunities.
Digital inclusion isn’t just about technology – it’s about creating equal opportunities for everyone to participate, contribute, and thrive in modern Britain. I look forward to the meaningful change we’ll drive together.”
Alongside this work for DSIT, Simeon is also part of the DCMS Future of TV distribution Stakeholder Forum, and its Audiences Sub-Committee. This group is examining the future of TV as more content migrates online. Simeon is co-Director of the Digital Media and Society Institute, which explores the social impacts of digital systems and media and is a co-lead of the AI for Life Research Frontier.
